Weight Management – the American Challenge

One of the biggest challenges we face as Americans is weight management. We know that obesity is a major problem for Americans. According to the CDC, Almost 40% of us, that is, 4 in 10 of us, are at a weight that fits the definition of “obese”. And this is a problem that seems to be at its worse in “middle age”. Almost 43% of adults aged 40 to 59 are obese.1 (https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html)

We know that obesity is associated with other diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. Obesity may not be the sole cause of these diseases.  However, it is associated with these diseases. For this reason, we seek to manage our weight because we know it is a contributing factor.

If weight management were easy we’d do this without any effort. We know that there are basic components to weight control: managing what we eat, increasing the amount of exercise, getting enough sleep. However, despite this knowledge, many of us aren’t successful at achieving our target weight objective without help. You can see evidence of this because of the many diet and weight loss solutions that are marketed to us.

In addition, many of us may have unrealistic expectations with regard to weight management. It is possible that some of us are attempting to achieve a target weight that is inappropriate for our frame and our age.

If you look at many of the diet and exercise programs that are marketed, there is a common piece of advice – ‘check with your physician before beginning this program.’ This is advice that is best taken. Your physician can help you determine if you are, in fact, obese or just in the category of wanting to lose a few extra pounds, or if you don’t need to take any action at all with regard to your weight. If you do need to make some changes, your physician can also help you determine what is a healthy weight for you as an individual.

Your physician can also help you by working with you to create a multi-faceted program designed to help you achieve your goals and can check in with you while you are on your journey.
